Ouah! It´s very sad when we use things like Christmas to fill our soul´s holes... Very sad, maybe because people have forgotten the real meaning of Christmas...
ReplyDeleteAlways thought it was hypocritical..the entire pagan/commercial mess has nothing to with Jesus ..who was more likely born in Spring...The whole thing is an enormous stretch .
ReplyDeleteI confess I put up a tree this year...
Would be nice if any residual and genuine goodwill...generosity and philanthropy would linger...or manifest itself more deeply and 24/7
poignant piece ...Das

sharp ..
ReplyDeletefor some, yes, there is a hole in one's soul to be filled.
beautiful entry..
A++
Wow, the cadence, the way the words hit the tongue- those "m's" in "emptiness", "transforming" "most", finishing with a smooth three syllable "sincere of us", for starters. Of course, the sentiment of the poem, its idea, is right on. Lovely work.
ReplyDeleteI like the "shackled to the leg of emptiness." Likewise, what a beautiful/disturbing image to end on--mistletoe rainbow. Rainbows for many are good luck, and they see good fortune if one follows the rainbow to its end, the gold is supposed to be there and waiting. Thus, when you couple rainbow to mistletoe, I get the same effect. Most associate mistletoe with goodness of a kiss, but this suggests that the kiss will not come or is false. Nice turn of words.
ReplyDeletehmm a lot to consider here... I love Christmas for family time. I love Advent for the preparation to grow closer to Jesus at Christmastime. I also enjoy the food and gift giving. I am grateful not to carry too much cynicism with me regarding Christmas. I can clearly see how that can happen. thanks for this piece, you made me think.
ReplyDeletegreat write!
ReplyDeleteI loved this. I was just talking yesterday with someone about how much the holidays suck and how fake it all is. Most people are miserable. There's so much pressure for everything to be perfect. You said it best with "no matter how pretty one dresses up the mundane the emptiness of the season can impair just the same" Loved this one....
ReplyDeleteTrue. Most people feel compelled to be happy, or to pretend to be happy, even though they're not. Like it's mandatory to be happy during the holidays, and people think (or hope) that presents, carols, and decorations can fill the void within them. It's sad. Great write, though!
ReplyDeletePlease feel free to take the awards in the post , share each award with 1 to 10 friends,
ReplyDeleteAwards 4 u, Merry Christmas
Well written and heartily felt piece on the dark and crass aspect of the season. But in the time of cold and short days, surely the heart of each of us needs to expand to giving that love we feel to those who need it and from that comes true joy. Well written. Thank you. Gay @beachanny
ReplyDeletehm - so true - so true - the suicide rate is extremely high around christmas - think you captured the dark side very well in your poem (though the green small writing is not easy to read if i may say so...)
ReplyDeleteSplendid piece of art..
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing this :)
Timely, solid.
ReplyDeleteba humbug indeed ;-> great to see some critical edge
ReplyDeleteIndeed, the mundane cannot be dressed convincingly for the occasion. Found myself nodding my head in agreement throughout your poem. Great write.
ReplyDeleteCynical and sharp.Unfortunately your words are true but there are few small pockets of joy about this time of year...I have one and I'm hidin' out in it:)Merry Xmas.
ReplyDeleteWell said on how lost in the spirit of these holidays many become..
ReplyDeleteI liked the way this poem read.. smooth yet sharp.. great mix..
Well done..
(thank you for commenting on my post)
dasuntoucha,
ReplyDeleteOh, so very true. This time of year brings about a frenzy of commercialism. The true meaning is lost.
Happy holidays to you and thanks for your continued support through the year.

'the holes in our souls with wholesale satisfaction' - great run of words, wonderful use of assonance here.
ReplyDeletegreat sentiment and very well expressed...the expectations of christmas far outweigh the reality..and for many people this in itself causes great distress...thanks for sharing..all the best Pete
ReplyDeleteSo true:)Materialism unfortunately has taken precedence over the warmth and peace the season ushers in.
ReplyDeleteHope to See you at potluck week 16 tomorrow…
ReplyDeleteWeek 16 theme: celebrations and festivities.
We will have a break after week 16, and come back on week 18…
Blessings!
Your support means a world to us…
